Garden & Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting: designed for the hours you are actually in the garden.

For most of the year, nobody in this country sits outside in daylight. The garden gets used from sunset onward, which means the lighting is not a finishing touch on the design: it is the design, for the hours that count.

Bad outdoor lighting is easy to recognise and almost always the same mistake: a few bright fittings aimed where they are convenient, which flatten everything and put glare straight into the eye of anyone sitting down. The garden ends up looking like a car park and feeling like one.

A scheme works in layers instead. Low, warm light on the ground to make paths and steps obvious without announcing them. Light up into trees and along walls to give the space depth and a boundary after dark. Something soft where people sit, positioned behind or beside the eye rather than in front of it. And the pool lit for swimming as well as for looking at from the kitchen window.

The part that has to be right first is the least visible. Cable routes, transformer positions and switching are planned with the hardscape and buried before the paving goes down. Retrofitting a garden that is already finished means lifting stone or running surface conduit, and it is the single most common reason a garden ends up with three fittings and an extension lead.

Why it has to be decided before the paving

Every cable, transformer and junction lives under the garden. Deciding the lighting after the stone is laid means either lifting it or accepting surface conduit and fittings placed where the cable happens to reach rather than where the light is needed.

That is the whole argument for one team designing and building: the lighting drawing and the paving drawing are the same drawing, produced before anybody orders material.

Judging a lighting scheme you cannot yet see

Lighting is the hardest part of a garden to imagine and the most expensive to redo, and a plan view tells you almost nothing about it. So we show it at night in Montera Preview (the scheme as it will actually look after dark, from the terrace, from the pool, from the kitchen window) and adjust it with you before a cable is buried.

For owners who are abroad or at work through the whole build, that is usually the moment the garden becomes real.

Questions we get asked

Why is outdoor lighting more than the price of the fittings?

Because a fitting on a shelf is not a lit garden. What you pay for is the design and the work that goes in before the paving, not the fixtures themselves, and a price that is only the fixtures leaves that out. It is why the cheap number looks cheaper, and why a garden ends up with three lights and an extension lead. Ask whether a quote includes the design and the installation, or only the fittings.

Why does my garden lighting look harsh?

Almost always too few fittings, too bright, aimed at seated eye level, and a mix of colour temperatures. The fix is more light sources at lower output, warm and consistent, placed so the source is out of the sightline.

Can lighting be added to a garden that is already built?

Yes, but it costs more and compromises more, because the cabling has to be worked around existing paving and planting. If the garden is being renovated anyway, do it then.

Can we control it from a phone?

Yes. Zoned and scheduled, so the garden can come on at sunset, drop to a quieter setting later, and be changed for an evening when you have people over.

What survives the summer, the irrigation and the salt air?

Properly outdoor-rated fittings with the right ingress protection, sealed connections and transformers positioned where they stay ventilated and dry. Specification matters more here than in most climates, particularly on coastal plots.

Should the pool be lit differently from the garden?

Yes. Pool lighting has to work for people in the water and for the view of it from the house, which is a different brief from lighting a path, and it is wired on a different, protected circuit.

How do we see the scheme before committing?

In Montera Preview, at night: the lighting is shown on a model of your actual plot so you can look at the terrace, the pool and the view from inside the house, and change it within the agreed design scope.

What it costs

Real rates from our own priced jobs, and what actually moves the number: the Dubai cost guide, and swimming pool costs.

When you compare quotes, compare what they include, not just the number. The cheapest price on a page is usually the one that leaves out the ground, the prep or the parts you never see, and that is where a job fails.
