Gazebos & Shade

Gazebos: a room in the garden, built like one.

A gazebo is not a parasol with ambition. It is a small building: it needs a foundation, it takes wind load, it wants power and light in it, and it has to sit somewhere that makes sense at four in the afternoon rather than on the plan.

We start with where and when you will use it. A gazebo placed for the drawing looks handsome and stands empty, because it catches the western sun at exactly the hour you would want to sit in it. Placed properly (read against the villa, the boundary and the path of the sun) it becomes the part of the garden that gets used every evening.

Then it gets built as a structure. Foundations sized for the span and the ground, a frame engineered for wind rather than assembled from a catalogue, and a roof that actually sheds water and shades at the angle the sun really arrives. Power, lighting, fans and speakers are planned before anything is cast, so the cables run underground and nothing is surface-mounted afterwards.

And it has to belong to the garden. The finishes follow the paving and the villa rather than fighting them, the levels meet without a lip, and the planting around it is chosen to close the space in without swallowing it.

More from Montera

Gazebo, pergola or shade sail: they solve different problems

A gazebo is roofed and usually free-standing: a destination in the garden, dry underneath, good for a dining table you want to leave out. A pergola is slatted and often attached to the villa: it breaks the sun over a terrace you already use without closing it in. A shade sail is the lightest answer of the three: fast, cheaper, and right where you want cover over a play area or a seating spot without adding a building.

Most villa gardens end up with two of the three, and they should be specified together so the roofs, posts and finishes read as one idea. If what you are picturing is a terrace off the house rather than a structure out in the garden, that is the pergola brief, not this one.

Shade sails and canopies

Where a full structure is more than the spot deserves, sails do the work: tensioned fabric on engineered posts or fixed back to the villa, angled to cut the afternoon sun and to shed water rather than pond it. The failure mode is always the fixing, so the posts are founded and the anchor points calculated for the tension the sail will actually pull.

Seeing it before it is built

A structure is the hardest thing to judge from a drawing, and the easiest to regret: the roof line sits lower than you pictured, the posts land in the view from the kitchen. So we build it in Montera Preview first and you walk around it, at the size it will really be, from wherever you are. Moving a post there costs a conversation. Moving it after the foundations are cast costs rather more.

Questions we get asked

What is the difference between a gazebo and a pergola?

A gazebo is roofed and usually free-standing: dry underneath, a destination in the garden. A pergola is slatted and often attached to the villa, breaking the sun over a terrace without closing it in. Many gardens want both, specified together so they read as one idea.

Do I need approval from the community or the developer?

Usually, yes: a roofed structure is a built addition and most communities and developers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi want it approved before it goes up. We prepare what the authority asks for as part of the work rather than leaving it with you.

Can we have lighting, fans and speakers in it?

Yes, and they should be decided before anything is cast. Power, lighting, fans and speakers are routed underground with the rest of the garden services so nothing is chased in or surface-mounted later.

Will it stand up to the wind?

It is designed to. The frame is engineered for wind load and the foundations are sized for the span and the ground, which is the difference between a structure and a flat-pack that comes down in a shamal.

Can you build one into a garden that is already finished?

Yes, though it is honest to say it costs more than doing it with the garden: services have to be routed under paving that already exists, and the finish has to be matched rather than specified together from the start.

How do we see what it will look like first?

In Montera Preview: the structure is built into a model of your actual plot and villa and you walk through it before anything is ordered, so the roof height, the post positions and the view from the house are decisions you make rather than discover.

What it costs

Real rates from our own priced jobs, and what actually moves the number: the Dubai cost guide, and swimming pool costs.

When you compare quotes, compare what they include, not just the number. The cheapest price on a page is usually the one that leaves out the ground, the prep or the parts you never see, and that is where a job fails.
